What Causes Hair Loss Post Pregnancy?
Hair loss after pregnancy, commonly known as postpartum hair loss or postpartum shedding, is a common occurrence experienced by many women. It typically occurs around three to six months after giving birth and is temporary. Here’s why it happens:
- Hormonal Changes: During pregnancy, increased levels of estrogen prolong the growing phase of hair, resulting in thicker, fuller hair. After childbirth, estrogen levels drop significantly, causing more hair to enter the resting phase and then shed. This shedding can be quite noticeable, but it’s usually temporary.
- Stress: Pregnancy, childbirth, and caring for a newborn can be physically and emotionally stressful. Stress is a common trigger for hair loss, and the stress associated with childbirth can contribute to postpartum shedding.
- Nutritional Factors: Pregnancy places high demands on the body for nutrients to support both the mother and the developing baby. After childbirth, if a woman’s diet lacks essential nutrients or if she’s not getting enough rest, it can affect hair health and contribute to postpartum hair loss.
- Physical Trauma: The physical stress of childbirth itself, particularly if it involved a difficult delivery or significant blood loss, can also contribute to temporary hair loss.
- Hormonal Imbalance: Fluctuations in hormones after childbirth can disrupt the hair growth cycle, leading to shedding.
